“Let’s Make This Dorm A Home” Paper Room

Description

I created a white paper room made out of paper, photographed it, and created a digital representation of that paper room. Hope you enjoy this special dorm paper room.

For this piece, I aimed to highlight the difference between the two different sides of a dorm, one being the default, empty room, and the other being actively moved into. In addition to giving a visual difference in how the two sides of the room look, there is also a mini narrative where a mouse had moved into the empty side of the room after it had been abandoned for so long, and now it is upset because a human moved in because said human brought a cat with them. I made the piece because of my own conflicting ideas of me moving out and into a dorm room when I’m in college. Initially, I wanted to show how the space didn’t feel like home at all, but along the way, I decided to shift and instead focus on how I would personally make a dorm room feel more like home. This included putting many pillows on the dorm bed like my current bed has,  bringing my cat for emotional support, and hanging posters and letters on the wall that remind me of my family, upbringing, and passions. I got a lot more enjoyment out of creating the artwork this way, and it even helped me feel a little more excited about moving out in the future.
